Grüner Veltliner 2012

The name’s a bit of a mouthful so we just call it Gru Vee. Roll it round in your mouth - it’s an apt name.

The best way to describe Grüner Veltliner is that it’s a cool climate wine somewhere between an aromatic white and a chardonnay. One of the reasons that we’re making it is to see if there’s life after Sauvignon Blanc. The initial results suggest there might be.

Winemakers notes

Its delicately perfumed nose shows white peach, floral & lime blossom notes with hints of almond. The stone fruit theme is carried through to the palate, where green peach, citrus and warm spice notes are found. There is a great persistence of flavour in this pale lime coloured wine. A unique new offering from Jules.

Vinification

The vines are a couple of years old now and seem to have settled in well, the fruit they produced this year impressed us again with its interesting aromatics and complex flavour profiles. The fruit was harvested by machine & hand from two small vineyards in Marlborough in late April - early May. The berries were gently pressed and the juice cold settled for 48hrs to remove any solids before fermenting with selected yeast strains. The fermentation was kept cool & long to retain the vibrant aromatics.
