Winemakers notes

The best way to describe Grüner Veltliner is that it’s a cool climate wine somewhere between an aromatic white and a chardonnay. One of the reasons that we’re making it is to stretch our wings, to see if there is life after Sauvignon Blanc. The initial results suggest that there might be.

AROMA & FLAVOUR

Refreshing Lemon aromas infuse delicate white peaches with a soft vanilla touch. A vibrant wine bursting with lemon and white peaches with a delicate coating of vanilla and a tingly white pepper bite. It provides a nice dry backbone yet is layered and creamy with soft acidity and nutty nuances. It is bright and fresh with great richness and texture from the wild ferment and provides a particularly long, harmonious finish.

VINTAGE NOTES

It was an average dry winter, bud-burst started well with very few frosts and a fairly even push. Flowering was cooler at the start of the period, but warmed up nicely, due to these good flowering conditions, berry set was very even. The Grüner had to be heavily thinned as it sets a huge crop, some bunches get up to 900grams! Most fruit passed through veraison fairly quickly. The period after veraison was followed by some warmer sunnier weather in the new year leading up to harvest. The Grüner was harvested later in the season, there is a lot of vigor variation through the block at Anderson’s due to the hilly nature of the block, this makes harvest a little later for this variety as we need to wait for the less vigorous vines to reach a minimum flavour ripeness before we pick the block, as a result this creates a broader flavour profile.

VINIFICATION

The grapes for this wine were harvested from one small vineyard in Marlborough’s Brancott valley by hand and machine. The machine harvested fruit was whipped to the winery, lightly pressed and cold settled over 48 hours to remove any solids before fermentation. The fermentation in tank was kept cool and long to retain the vibrant aromatic. This contrasted with the handpicked grapes which were pressed and went directly into old French oak for a hot, fast, wild ferment and malolactic fermentation. Afterwards I gently clarified, stabilised and bottled the wine with a screw cap closure to retain freshness.

International Wine Competition

Unfolding well, the distinctive 2017 vintage is a single-vineyard wine, hand-picked in the Brancott Valley and partly (20 per cent) fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak casks. Light lemon/green, it is fragrant, full-bodied and bone-dry (0.2 grams/litre residual sugar), with good intensity of vibrant, peachy, citrusy, slightly spicy flavours, gentle biscuity notes and a crisp, lingering finish. Drink now or cellar.

MICHAEL COOPER - 4.5 STARS

A beautifully styled gruner; the elegantly expressed bouquet shows white flesh nectarine, lemon peel, jasmine and subtle spice aromas, leading to a finely textured palate that is focused and vibrant. The wine offers lovely fruit purity and poise, backed by bright acidity, finishing linear and persistent. At its best: now to 2020.

SAM KIM, WINE ORBIT - 4.5 STARS | 91 POINTS

Fragrant, floral grüner veltliner, with classic citrus and green tea flavours. A precise, pure wine supported by a backbone of fruity acidity that gives the wine freshness and helps drive a lengthy finish.

BOB CAMPBELL M.W. - 91 POINTS

Dried-flower, chamomile and beeswax aromas with light, dried herbs on offer, too. The palate has a bright, light and crunchy feel. Some handy stone-fruit flavors build into the finish. Certainly one of the better New Zealand examples of grüner veltliner. Drink now. Screw cap.

JAMES SUCKLING - 92 POINTS

Bright, light golden-yellow colour with straw-green hues, paler on the edge.  The nose is softly full and up-front with positive aromas of ripe yellow stonefruits and hints of tropical fruit entwined with subtle notes of green stonefruits and fresh herbs, some mineral elements, unfolding fragrant florals.  Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has a rich, softly packed, dense core of yellow stonefruits and tropical fruit, with green stonefruits, herbs and lifted florals.  This has richness and presence and the wine flows with good energy along a fine-textured phenolic line, with fresh, underlying acidity.  The flavours carry to an elegant, lingering, but rich finish.  This is a rich, up-front, well-concentrated dry Gruner Veltliner with stonefruit, tropical fruit, herbal and floral notes on a palate with presence and a fine-textured line.
